Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment in Westminster last week. In doing so, he pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day this week (Wednesday 27 January).
That date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Holocaust Memorial Day honours all of those murdered during the Holocaust, as well as in subsequent genocides, and pays tribute to the extraordinary work by survivors to educate people about the atrocities committed over 70 years ago.
Mr Evennett said “The theme of this year’s memorial is ‘Don’t stand by’. Even in 2016, hate and race crime has not gone away and too many people are still suffering from persecution and violence globally. The scale of the Holocaust must never be forgotten, and we should not allow any persecution to take root anywhere in the world”.
