Evennett welcomes English veto

Big Ben ProfileRt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, has welcomed the plans announced by the Leader of the House of Commons today (2 July) that would give Members of Parliament representing English constituencies the final say on legislation that only affected England.

Under the plans announced by Chris Grayling, every MP will continue to have a vote on every Bill. But English MPs will now have a veto in Westminster when debating matters that have been devolved to the Scottish Parliament or the Welsh or Northern Ireland Assemblies.

Mr Evennett said “I welcome these proposals which will bring balance and fairness to our law-making process in Parliament. It is not right that at present, MPs from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales get a decisive vote on matters that only affect England. These plans will address this historic problem and ensure that as other countries get greater devolution, England is not forgotten.”
