Bexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett has supported standardised tobacco packets in a Parliamentary vote this afternoon, 11 March. He voted in favour of legislation that will mean every packet of cigarettes will look the same from 2016, except for the make and brand name. The measure passed through the House of Commons by a margin of 367 to 113 in a free vote.
Mr Evennett said “I am concerned about young people taking up smoking and also the number of people across the age spectrum – some ten million – who still smoke. The consequences of smoking for people’s health is clear so we need to do all that we can to help smokers stop and dissuade children from starting. I am a strong supporter of the Stop Smoking Campaign in Bexley and hope that this measure will help to stop people from smoking.”
