David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, was one of the guests at a special piano concert held at Hall Place on Thursday afternoon, 13 November. Pianist Carol Ann Wells sang a number of songs from the 1940s and played some pieces that were popular at the time.
The event was held as part of Hall Place’s “Code Name: Santa Fe” exhibition. Until March 2015, guests can discover how American soldiers stationed at Hall Place – code name Santa Fe – intercepted encoded messages sent by the Germans. GI veterans’ memories and declassified files reveal the importance of their round-the-clock, top-secret work, which helped defeat the Nazis.
Mr Evennett said “Hall Place has seen many changes and had lots of different uses during its long history. It has been a stately home, offices and a school. Hall Place also played an important part of our efforts during World War Two as a communications centre. I would urge local people to continue to support our local heritage and culture and visit.”
