Royal Mail must recognise Crayford as a separate town

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford has expressed his disappointment that Royal Mail will not recognise Crayford as a separate postal town. At present, Crayford addresses are designated as Dartford by Royal Mail.

Mr Evennett made representations to the Chief Executive, Moya Greene, last month asking whether they had any plans to review the current situation, following contact from constituents and Crayford Ward Councillor Geraldene Lucia-Hennis. He argued that “Crayford is a town in its own right with an expanding population and a long history.”

In her response, Ms Greene stated that “Changes will only be made for postal operational and efficiency reasons and I am therefore sorry that we have no plans to change the designated postal town for Barnehurst and Crayford.”

Mr Evennett has written again to Ms Greene, saying that “I was indeed surprised by your response, which appears to suggest that this is only done for the convenience of Royal Mail. As mentioned in my previous letter to you, Crayford is a distinct and separate town in the London Borough of Bexley, not Dartford borough. There is no geographic link between places such as St Paulinus Church or the local Crayford schools and sports clubs with Dartford. Most continue to use Crayford as their postal town in correspondence and advertise their businesses as such. On behalf of residents I strongly urge you to reconsider your position.”

Commenting on the campaign, Mr Evennett said “I am both surprised and disappointed that Royal Mail will not listen to local residents and businesses. At a time when Royal Mail faces strong competition and their service is deteriorating, I would have thought that they might be willing to act on the concerns of their customers.”

Crayford resident, Councillor Geraldene Lucia-Hennis commented that she was concerned that Crayford was losing its identity and that the new properties being built were being designated as Dartford. She understood that the Royal Mail dealt mainly with postcodes and had no need to omit Crayford town from addresses.
