Government announces tax-free childcare to support families

New Profile PortraitBexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett has welcomed today’s landmark announcement that the Government will introduce a new tax-free childcare scheme to support working families.

Under the proposals, the Government will meet 20% of childcare costs. From the first year of operation, all children under 5 will be eligible and the scheme will build up over time to include children under 12. Each parent must be earning less than £150,000 per year.

The scheme will be worth £2,400 to a typical working family with two children aged under 12 and once fully implemented will help 2.5million families.

Mr Evennett said “Conservatives in Government are taking action to deal with Labour’s appalling legacy on childcare. Labour’s failures meant that childcare costs were amongst the highest and families effectively sacrificed the second household income to pay for childcare.

“This Government has already increased the free early education entitlement for 3 and 4 year olds and Ministers are taking action to improve the quality of childcare.

“I strongly support today’s announcement as it will provide much needed help to working families in Bexleyheath and Crayford. By making childcare tax-free the Government is demonstrating that we are on the side of those who are working hard, looking to find jobs or just need help making ends meet.”
