The Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Andrew Lansley MP, has announced that he is placing South London Healthcare Trust under a “Trust Special Administration” regime.
This is due to the poor financial performance of the Trust, which is losing £1million per week, in addition to the problems caused by PFI contracts.
Mr Evennett was one of a number of Conservative MPs who held an emergency meeting with Andrew Lansley at the House of Commons yesterday evening.
Commenting on the decision, Mr Evennett said:
“I welcome the action taken by the Secretary of State as this situation has gone on for far too long.
“The two expensive PFI deals signed by the previous Labour Government have certainly caused considerable problems for South London Healthcare NHS Trust. The merger of the three Hospitals by the previous Government did not work and was a grave mistake.
“I believe that the management have failed to get to grips with many of the financial and medical problems during the three years they have been in charge. My constituents deserve better.
“I think we now have a real opportunity to ensure that Queen Mary’s Hospital has a viable and sustainable future, providing important services and treatments for Bexley patients. In order to achieve all this, the Trust has to be broken up.”
