Evennett gets behind the New Bus for London

David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, is pictured with Bexley Councillor Philip Read after viewing the New Bus for London on Wednesday morning, 4 January.

The bus was on public view in Bexleyheath Broadway as part of a cross-London tour prior to entering service early next year.

Commenting on the design, Mr Evennett said “I believe that this is a fantastic new bus for London. It combines modern design and technology with a retro feel. I look forward to it entering service”.

About the vehicle

The New Bus for London was commissioned by London Mayor Boris Johnson in 2008.

Designed by Heatherwick Studio, it is built by Wrightbus. Inspired by the old Routemaster, it is modern, fully accessible and uses the latest green technology.

It’s the first bus designed specifically for the Capital’s streets for more than 50 years. Passengers will be able to hop on and off through three sets of doors. When a conductor is on board, passengers can also use the open rear platform.

The buses will operate first on route 38 between Victoria and Hackney. The prototype vehicles will enter service from 20 February 2012, and by May 2012 the first eight will be in service.
