David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, has welcomed the decision made by the Payments Council today (12 July) not to proceed with plans that would have seen cheques scrapped.
Over the past 18 months, they have been consulting on proposals to close the cheque clearance system and introduce a new paper-based alternatives to cheques. However, widespread opposition from MPs, including Mr Evennett, members of the public and a variety of businesses, charities and other organisations convinced them to keep cheques “indefinitely”.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Evennett said “Too many vulnerable people, charities and businesses rely on cheques to pay for goods and services. I am pleased that the Payments Council have seen sense and scrapped their plans.”
