David Evennett MP, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, visited Welling Baptist Church in Axminster Crescent, Welling, on Friday 7 January to find out about the free debt counselling and advice offered locally in conjunction with Christians Against Poverty UK (CAP). The Church became a CAP Centre in 2010, managed by Church Pastor Andrew Turner.
Trained volunteers help with home visits and one-to-one support for debt issues. The CAP headquarters in Bradford assists by calculating a weekly budget from an individual’s income for living costs, debt repayments and savings, whilst acting on their behalf in negotiations with their creditors.
The Church also runs CAP Money courses – free lessons in budgeting and money management skills.
Mr Evennett said “There is a clear need for debt counselling and advice, with so many people experiencing bankruptcy or being unable to meet their repayments. I was impressed with the professional approach taken by the local volunteers and the support offered nationally. I wish them well and hope their worthwhile work is a success”.
